September 1 is Building and Code Staff Appreciation Day — Is Your Municipality Celebrating?
September 1 is a great opportunity for municipalities to recognize the people working behind the scenes to help keep our communities safe: building officials, inspectors, plans examiners, permit technicians, code enforcement staff, and the entire team that supports the building and development process.
The International Code Council consistently highlights the important role building safety professionals play in protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Their work helps ensure that the homes, businesses, schools, and public buildings in our communities are safe and code-compliant.
So why not take a little time on September 1 to celebrate your team?
A few easy ideas:
-
Host a staff breakfast, lunch, or ice cream social.
-
Create a fun "Code Crew MVP" recognition.
-
Ask municipal leadership or elected officials to give the department a public shout-out.
-
Share staff photos or "Meet the Building Department" spotlights on social media.
-
Encourage coworkers to write short thank-you notes.
-
Hold a building-code trivia contest with small prizes.
-
Take a team photo with a "We Help Build a Safer Community" sign.
-
Consider a municipal proclamation recognizing Building and Code Staff Appreciation Day.
Recognition does not have to be expensive or elaborate. A simple thank-you can mean a lot to the professionals whose work is often unseen, but whose impact is all around us.
How is your municipality recognizing its Building and Code staff this September 1? Share your ideas below — maybe we can start a few new traditions!
